General Comments On How People Have Gone about the still shot films

Lets see still image films with audio. Well its quite difficult to make a few still images look interesting, therefore the use of sounds is very important. the class used many different aspects and most worked well; folio a sound track ie music and either a monologue/voice over.
Most of the shots were correctly framed, which is important as you need to be able to see everything to understand the content.
Some of the films were a little fast which did not allow you to understand as much as if they had slightly slowed down the images. but on the whole they were correctly timed.
The only film i found quite symbolic was todds which is odd as you would think as this is quite an artish Course there would be many more points trying to be put across. Otherwise the narratives were all quite clear.
With the time we were given as a class it was quite functional. Nobody went outside the box did not have to really strain my brain to understand what was going on. Also the shots were always in a logical sequence nobody muked around to create a sense of unease to the viewer no mater what the subject/contents of the film.

Portfolio exercise 3 Lighting

What Can I learn About Natural and Atifical Light?
Well The Photographers work we were given, work in different fields ie Edward Steichen is a fine art photographer, Ansel Adams is mainly Landscaps, Weegee is a photogerenalist and Paul strnad is a documentry photographer. From the photos i looked at they mostly just use natural light
what i have learnt is that you can still get a good photo wheather you stick in twenty lights or have non what so ever, And therefore both have their uses. to be honest most of the photos were taken back before the 50's so technology was not as advanced and therefore they had to do with what the had.

Mise-en-scene

The Blocking in this film is quite important; each character has a different relationship with one another, however the Presenters character is Platonic and is able to mingle equally with each character.
The different sets change the emotions of the characters, i.e. when the contestants are in their dressing rooms. they are alot more open with their feelings (they seem to come out of the shell)
But when they are in front of each other they are quite shy.
The Camera placement in this film will be very revealing and in your face not at all suttel. we want to get out every last emotion and action that we can, we want to protrude into these people's life's.
The location is hope to film in will give me the opportunity to film between the stage/ set and the audience. This will allow me to have a crowd in the stalls and a sense of realism, i.e. we will see people holding up signs to encourage the crowd 'boo' 'clap' etc.
I hope to use a camera with a 15mm lens to give me a nice open feel to the stage so you can see everything. But for the interviews of the contestants maybe a 35 o even a 50mm lens to get good portrait shots.
I want the composition quite minimal so that all the viewers attention is on the contestants. The camera movements will not be very drastic, maybe a few pans as the presenter walks around the stage or maybe i might like the camera to follow him at all times. over the shoulder for the interviews in the dressing rooms maybe, but am not sure until i start shooting.
I want to cover most of the set/stage most of the time apart from the odd close up on each character.
Set colour in this film will be quite vibrant, maybe some lights etc but each character has their own characterising colour, i.e. Caroline for intense must be quite dull apart from the bright head banner .
Depth of the shots will be created by different shades of colours adding more layers to the shots. i hope to light the set to give different moods. but as the space is completely blacked out from outside light it will give me a great atmosphere for what ever the time of day i decide to shoot in.
The rhythm is going to be quite bounce i.e. if some one feels a little low the presenter tries to comfort them and then get them back on with the game.
we see the film mainly one point of view the camera and there for the viewers however we also see alot thought the eye of the presenter and occasionally the contestants.
Most of the sounds you will hear will be diagetic however these maybe over dubbed to add clarity. and some possible Foley in which case there will be aspects of non diegetic.
Their will be some soundtrack to kick off and end the show as well as voice overs by the presenter. most of the sound will be objective. and again form the audiences point of view.

10 POINT PLAN FOR MY DIRECTION SCRIPT

1) This Film deals with issues of today’s society for instance anorexia, obesity and the world of reality television. These issues are address thought the characters and the locations that the film is set.
2) Though out this film there are many turns between reflection, anxiety, dilution, self doubt, grief and anger each character almost relates to one of these words through the duration of the film.
3) Scene one- sausages cooking in a pan immediately gives the notion that food will be addressed in the next 10 minutes. We then fade into the eating competition banner above the tables, and the sausages become clear.
Scene two- we are introduced into the scene by the presenter who shows us around the set; which then moves onto introduce the contestants.
Scene three- we enter the dressing rooms of each of the contestants and have a quick chat, to get some background and the realisation of the sort of people that take part in reality television.
Scene four- we re-enter the set and the contestants sit in front of there huge pills of sausages.
Scene five- the remaining scenes take place on the main set were we then end the film with the winner and fade to black for the credits.
4) Each scene portrays each character in a different light. We become to realise each characters back-story and with that each scene blends well with the characters mood/ emotion. I.e. when we are seeing the contestants in there secluded dressing rooms the characters open up releasing inner feelings. Caroline is infact shouting at Simon, but when you look at her a moderate breeze would blow her over.
5) Simon, who infact I am changing to be called Hans; an Austrian with only food in his life. Caroline is quiet obviously anorexic or maybe even bulimic as she vomits as soon as the competition finishes. I don’t think she has a lot going for her due to the fact that this spectacle of humiliation is better than anything in her life, plus she is rooting for the cash prize so money is obviously an issue in her life.
Harry on the other hand is only there for a laugh he doesn’t need the money doesn’t care about the competition the people or whether he wins or looses life’s a bit of a game.
The presenter wants out of this job however the only way to bring home money is to do this line of work due to the fact that showbiz is so difficult to get into and to stay anywhere within it, but he desperately wants to go higher.
6) The First Beat in the Film is the sight of the sausage being cooked; for this beat I will cook many party sausages so when they are tossed into the air it gives you a feeling you are about to watch something incredible.
The second beat all are attention is on the presenter as he sets the scene with uplifting enthusiasm.
The next three beat introduce the contestants each character bring a different emotion and response to the competition and the other competitors, this beat makes you want to continue sitting in your seat to find out what will happen due to the drama.
The main scene with in the film contains most of the drama, conflict and panic, therefore most of the beats take place here. This begins with the anxiety of the contestants to begin, the shot of the clock hands moving shows both boredom and endurance of the contestants eating for so long. I think the most significant beat is the point in which Harry wins the competition, Caroline Vomits due to the amount of food she’s eaten. And I added this in but Hans (Simon) falls off his chair and has a heart attack. The Presenter rounds up the show very quickly and we fade to the credits.
7) The Reality of the scene is that they are the reality of life. These people lives are to try and get into the lime light of the world. They will do anything to do something with their lives, to try and be happy even at the cost of their integrity or even their lives.
8) I have done some research on reality television but have found the best way to research is just to actually watch it analyse it and try and use it to my advantage. This has been hard due to the type of people that appear on these show, and the presenters G class celebrities presenting.
I have Researched Anorexia and Obesity however so far all the research has not told me anything I didn’t know; these issues are just to prevalent in today’s society due to advertisement, companies and public image of each other, and the fact parents should pay more attention to their children.
9) I wish to turn the script into a bit of a piss take through adding humours events and changing characters slightly to make more qwerky. Bring the entire thing slightly away form reality and into fiction. But still use all the dialogue and cues form the script I have chosen.
10) Block diagram.

Beneath Perfection

I found this script on www.simplyscripts.com/movie.html i had never heard of the film, however within the first 30 pages or so thought it was setting up a little like something from an x files episode.

The Events as read from the script.
We begin in a small town which is more like a village called BENEATH PERFECTION in the middle of the desert some were near Vegas USA. We begin the film with two characters Edgar and Fred, Edgar's has a donkey which is mutualated during the night in a vicious way leaving blood all over the barn.
We then meet a couple of labourers/ handy men Earl and Valentine (Val) and the story centres around them, they have had enough of the labour and decided to get permanent jobs in the local town Bixby, but on their way out of town they come across Edgar strapped dead from dehydration up an electrical pylon, they unstrap him and take him to the doctor in the town and try leaving again, when they come across Fred who has been sucked into the ground with no trace but is old hat and a hole, they drive off again and come across bodies. Earlier the road worker Carmine gets sucked into the ground by a tenticle with spins along it, orange gew spurts out as he hits it with a jackhammer, and Howard another road worker is eaten by hungry beaked like monsters.
Earl and Val come across the a road works truck previously owned by Howard and Carmine Earl and Val get attacked by the beast in the car but manage to escape with part of it still attached to their truck and race back to the towns general store owned by a Chinese man named Phan Vam. The Entire village are there to see the tenticle stuck to the back of Earls truck and they discuss what it might be.
There is a geology student named Rhonda doing test on the local area but she is recording abnormal results, when the beast comes for her, but just misses her by inches as she drives off unaware that a beast was ever there.
The group of villagers decide action must be taken and arm themselves.
Val and Earl decide to leave on horse back, but whilst they are getting ready a kid from the village runs out the store with the tentacle around him screaming, everyone points they rifles at him until he falls over laughing and the village return to see earl and val off, they come across the doctors house were the beast/ monster has already been and killed the doc and his wife, bearing them in the ground inside their station wagon. they ride on but after a while their horses are spooked and buck and one gets eaten by the monster; whilst the other gallops off as fast as possible val picks earl of the ground val shoots one of the tentacle it lets go of the horse and disappears into the ground and comes up underneath were they are standing, the hole opens revealing a huge mouth, both the men run for it along a barbed wire fence, the approach a 8 foot gorge in the ground and the fence goes all the way to it. they jump for it and don't make it frantically try to get out. the beast now underground comes up on the gorge but stops dead as it hits a concrete wall in the gorge and seems to die. They find Rhonda looking down at them she has recorded some more earth tremor's. She works out there are about four more out in the groundof the desert. They begin getting reading indicating more are on there way to them. They run for Rhonda's truck a monster comes out and they jump onto a boulder were they are trapped all night. Morning comes and Rhonda comes up with an idea of pole vaulting from boulder to boulder. They reach her truck and drive back to the town store. The three gather the villagers and tell them whats happening and then the monsters hit town. The monsters trap the villagers into the store, val and earl save a few helpless villages from being eaten but still find themselves stuck in the store. The next plan is to hike across the mountains to Bixby due to the mountains being granite and the monsters seem to only move in loose dirt.
As they Hid in the store a compressor for one of the fridges turns on they dash to turn it off but the monster is already there grabbing Phams leg and pulls him back down the hole from wince it came. They all clamber up onto the roof of the store.
They're friends Burt and Heather return to their house after finding nothing to hunt down they switch on a cartridge cleaner and the noise begins to bring the worm like monsters towards them. They fight it off finally killing it with an elephant gun. The remaining four creatures surround the store, they move around all the buildings in the village as a pack trying to work out were the people have gone. They make a plan so as not to be around when the entire village is flattened they use a garden tractor as a distraction and try to use a bulldozer to drive up to the mountains, the distracting tractor stop and the monster begin to chase Val to the bulldozer. Val heads for town with the bulldozer fired up. Val And Earl rescue the villages and head up to pick up Heather and Burt who are making bombs.
They reach the solid rock at the bottom of the mountain and see a dust cloud near them, the bulldozer falls into a ditch that the worms have created. Burt starts to through the bombs into the ground, the worms scatter due to the noise, they return. The group decide to run for some rocks.
They begin to argue as they realise they are not safe yet, however they come up with a plan to destroy the remaining worms, they through the bombs into the monsters mouths by using rope to lure the worms up to the surface, a type of fishing. They end up killing all the worm monsters and those who are still alive live happily ever after.
The End

It turns out i have seen this film it is called 'Tremors' staring Kevin Bacon. I like the script it is fun, dramatic and has good posiblity's for action sequences.
Remembring back to the film, the first hour or so was a good watch taken quite serioulsy, however once the film reveals the monster it became a bit of a joke. This may have been down to the lake of funds after all the stunts with people being sucked though floors and having building moving/being pulled apart, or prehaps it was due to being made without the us of CGI as is was not very advanced in the 80's when the film was made.
If i were to make this film i do not think i would change much however instead of making it quite tounge in cheek due to the monster i would use CGI and make it alot more scary; as when you do not see the beast you use your imagination which turn out to be alot more scary than what you end up seeing on the screen, therefore some CGI would certainly cause more panic when seeing the beast.
The main subtext in this script is human survival, the most primal instincts we have; when threatened we become killers. Stess is also an emotion i saw alot of, which made the script more dramatic. The main characters in the script are Earl and Val, who's mind we see most of the script through, they are both hand men/ cowboys that do odd jobs, Texan.

Scripts

On First Reading the five scripts i only liked The Eating Competition and the Shelfish Cut, however after reading the scripts several more times i realised that all the scripts had hidden
aspect that could be interesting to try and develop. I think the script
i would like to produce tho is the Eating Competition as i almost instantly
had loads of ideas to add to the script, improve and make my own. Plus it
had some meaningful messages; like eating disorders, reality
television.
EMERGENT CLAUSES
This Play is about the working industry and how a boss can manipulat something innocent and turn it into a money gaining enterprise, it also shows how possible friends can become opponents. However, I did not like the script it irritated me it did not seem to do anything for me, the main character had teacher like characteristics, not an idealist, trying to taint christmas.
CLOWN
Was About a clown realising how wrong he was for his jobthis goes on to show the harsh realities of being in the entertainment industry how cut throught it is. This play also shows how much reputation means to these people as the compere has such a go at the clown backsatge. through the play the clown is on the verge of a life changing disision which we all have to deal with somethimes but this play represented the full extent of his own actions.
BIG EATING COMPETITION
As i said before this deals with people emotions, general topics that are around today, but also the human emotion and drive of winning even if as triviual as an eating competion that may be shown on the worst tv channel on sky that no one has ever watched.
THE SHELFISH CUT
A Lad walks into a barbers shop with a very high esteem of himself and proceededs to be rude to the barber who inturn seems to take no notice and begins to cut the hair, however due to the rudeness of the lad does not cut his hair but tricks the lad into paying for nothing. This script deals with people dealing with others but in a way of deseption and lies. this is present in everday life whether just personaly religiously or the way people fight wars politics are consumed by events triggered by things that are barred and brought back to the surface.
HIDDEN PATTERN
Did not like this script. we start the script with a man standing infont of a building witha a suitcase, we presume going into a meeting has some nerves just like anyone, however we realise as he enters that hes looking for a job maybe a job centre, maybe having money problems. there are also hidden events that this person has been though. the entire time the guy is thinking abou these events.
